Lassaigne's test fuses the organic compound with sodium metal to convert N, S, and halogens (normally covalent, water-insoluble forms) into ionic, water-soluble sodium salts, which are then detected in the resulting extract using specific colour/precipitate tests.

Principle: In most organic compounds, elements like nitrogen, sulphur, and halogens are covalently bonded and cannot be detected by simple ionic tests directly. When the compound is fused (strongly heated) with sodium metal, these covalently bound elements are converted into ionic sodium compounds:

Na + C + N -> NaCN (if N present, especially with C also present)

2Na + S -> Na2S

Na + X -> NaX (X = Cl, Br, I)

If both N and S are present together, sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) may form instead of separate NaCN.

The fused mass is plunged into distilled water and boiled/filtered to give the Lassaigne's extract, which now contains these species in ionic, water-soluble form.

Detection tests on the extract:

  • Test for nitrogen: The extract is treated with freshly prepared FeSO4, boiled, then acidified with dilute H2SO4, and FeCl3 is added. A Prussian blue colouration/precipitate confirms nitrogen (via formation of sodium ferrocyanide, then ferric ferrocyanide).

  • Test for sulphur: (i) Sodium nitroprusside test: addition of freshly prepared sodium nitroprusside solution to the extract gives a violet/purple colouration if sulphur is present.

    (ii) Lead acetate test: the extract is acidified with acetic acid and lead acetate solution is added; a black precipitate of PbS confirms sulphur.
