Lassaigne's extract is prepared by sodium-fusing the organic sample and dissolving the fused mass in water.

Procedure: A small piece of sodium metal (freed from any oxide coating) is placed in a clean, dry ignition/fusion tube and gently heated over a flame until the sodium melts to form a shining globule. A small amount of the organic compound to be tested is then added directly onto the molten sodium. The tube is heated further, strongly, until it becomes red hot, ensuring the reaction goes to completion — this converts any nitrogen present into sodium cyanide (NaCN), any sulphur present into sodium sulphide (Na2S), and any halogen present into the corresponding sodium halide (NaX), all of which are water-soluble ionic compounds (unlike the original covalently-bonded organic compound).
