Newton's law of gravitation: every particle attracts every other particle with a force F = G m1 m2 / r^2, directed along the line joining them, where G is a universal constant.

Statement: Every particle of matter in the universe attracts every other particle with a force which is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. The force acts along the line joining the two particles.

Mathematical form:

F = G (m1 m2) / r^2

where:

m1, m2 = masses of the two particles

r = distance between their centres

G = universal gravitational constant = 6.674 x 10^-11 N m^2 kg^-2

Explanation:

  • The force is always attractive (never repulsive), unlike electric force.
  • G is a universal constant: its value is the same everywhere in the universe, independent of the medium between the masses or the nature of the masses. …
