Newton's law of gravitation states that any two point masses attract each other with a force F = G m1 m2/r^2 along the line joining them; G is the universal constant of proportionality.

Statement: Every particle of matter in the universe attracts every other particle with a force which is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. This force acts along the line joining the two particles.

Mathematically, for two point masses m1 and m2 separated by a distance r:

F proportional to (m1 m2)/r^2

F = G (m1 m2)/r^2

where G is a constant of proportionality called the universal gravitational constant.
