Orbital velocity is the speed for a stable circular orbit; equating gravitational force to centripetal force gives v = sqrt(GM/(R+h)).

Definition: Orbital velocity is the minimum speed with which a body (satellite) must be projected so that it revolves around the Earth in a stable circular orbit of a given radius.

Derivation: Consider a satellite of mass m orbiting the Earth (mass M, radius R) at height h, so the orbital radius is (R + h). The gravitational attraction of the Earth provides exactly the centripetal force needed for the circular motion:

GMm(R+h)2=mv2(R+h)\dfrac{GMm}{(R+h)^2} = \dfrac{mv^2}{(R+h)}

Cancelling m and one factor of (R + h): …
