Kepler's three laws: planets move in ellipses with the Sun at a focus; the Sun-planet line sweeps equal areas in equal times; and T^2 is proportional to a^3 for every planet.

  1. Law of orbits:

Every planet revolves around the Sun in an elliptical orbit, with the Sun located at one of the two foci of the ellipse (not at the centre). This replaced the earlier belief in perfectly circular orbits.

  2. Law of areas:

The line (radius vector) joining the Sun to a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time; that is, the areal velocity (dA/dt) of the planet is constant. This is a direct consequence of the conservation of angular momentum, since the gravitational force is a central force (always directed along the line joining Sun and planet), so it exerts no torque about the Sun. A consequence is that a planet moves faster when nearer the Sun (perihelion) and slower when farther away (aphelion).

  3. Law of periods: …
