Limiting friction is the maximum static friction (f_L = mu_s N) that acts just before sliding begins; the laws of friction describe how this force depends on the normal reaction and the surfaces in contact.

Definition: As an increasing external force is applied to a body resting on a surface, the opposing static friction also increases to match it, keeping the body at rest. But static friction cannot increase indefinitely - it has a maximum value, beyond which the body starts to slide. This maximum value of static friction, reached just before the body begins to move, is called limiting friction (f_L).

Laws of friction:

  1. The force of limiting friction is directly proportional to the normal reaction (N) between the two surfaces: f_L is proportional to N, i.e. f_L = mu_s N, where mu_s is the coefficient of static friction.
