Static friction opposes the start of relative motion (self-adjusting, up to a limiting value); kinetic friction opposes motion already in progress and is generally slightly smaller than the limiting static friction.

Static friction: When a body at rest on a surface is not moving even though an external force is applied, the opposing frictional force that balances the applied force is called static friction. It is self-adjusting — it increases as the applied force increases, up to a maximum value called limiting friction, f(s,max) = mu(s) N, where mu(s) is the coefficient of static friction and N is the normal reaction.

Kinetic (dynamic) friction: Once the applied force exceeds the limiting static friction and the body starts sliding, the opposing frictional force is called kinetic friction, given by f(k) = mu(k) N, where mu(k) is the coefficient of kinetic friction. Unlike static friction, kinetic friction is roughly constant (does not increase further) and does not depend significantly on the relative sliding speed.
