The law of conservation of linear momentum states that the total momentum of an isolated system stays constant when no external force acts, and it follows directly from Newton's third law.

Statement: If no external force acts on a system of bodies, the total linear momentum of the system remains constant, regardless of the mutual (internal) forces the bodies exert on each other.

Derivation (for two interacting bodies): Consider two bodies of masses m1 and m2 with momenta p1 and p2, interacting with each other (e.g. in a collision) but with no external force acting on the pair.

Let F12 be the force on body 1 due to body 2, and F21 be the force on body 2 due to body 1. By Newton's third law:

F12 = -F21

By Newton's second law, F12 = dp1/dt and F21 = dp2/dt, so:

dp1/dt = -dp2/dt

d(p1 + p2)/dt = 0
