In the absence of an external force, the total linear momentum of a system of particles stays constant.

Statement: The total linear momentum of an isolated system of interacting particles remains constant (conserved) as long as no net external force acts on the system.

Explanation and proof: Consider two bodies of masses m1 and m2, moving with initial velocities u1 and u2, that collide and move off with final velocities v1 and v2. By Newton's second law, the total momentum p = p1 + p2 of the system changes according to:

dp/dt = F(external)

If the system is isolated (no external force), F(external) = 0, so:

dp/dt = 0, which means p = constant

So: m1 u1 + m2 u2 = m1 v1 + m2 v2
