In the absence of any external force, the total momentum of a system of interacting bodies remains unchanged — this is the law of conservation of linear momentum.

Statement: If no external force acts on a system of two or more bodies, the total linear momentum of the system remains constant, however the bodies within it may interact with one another (e.g. through collisions or explosions).

Explanation/Derivation: Consider two bodies of masses m1 and m2 moving with initial velocities u1 and u2 respectively, along the same line, and colliding with each other. Let F12 be the force exerted by body 2 on body 1, and F21 the force exerted by body 1 on body 2, during the brief time Δt of collision.

By Newton's third law: F12 = −F21

Change in momentum of body 1: F12 Δt = m1v1 − m1u1

Change in momentum of body 2: F21 Δt = m2v2 − m2u2

Adding these two equations:

(F12 + F21) Δt = (m1v1 − m1u1) + (m2v2 − m2u2)

Since F12 = −F21, the left side is zero:

0 = (m1v1 + m2v2) − (m1u1 + m2u2)

Therefore:

m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2
