Free vibrations occur when a system, displaced once from equilibrium and then left alone, oscillates at its own natural frequency under its internal restoring force.

When a body such as a simple pendulum or a mass on a spring is displaced from its equilibrium (mean) position and released, it oscillates back and forth about that mean position purely under the action of its own restoring force (gravity component for a pendulum, spring force for a mass-spring system). No external periodic force keeps supplying energy during the motion.
