A reversible process is a slow, idealized process with no energy dissipation that can be exactly undone; an irreversible process is any real, spontaneous process that cannot be exactly undone without a lasting change elsewhere.

Reversible process:

  • Carried out infinitely slowly (quasi-statically), so the system passes through a continuous series of equilibrium states.
  • Has no dissipative effects such as friction, viscosity, or unrestrained expansion.
  • Can be reversed at any point by an infinitesimal change in conditions, restoring both the system and the surroundings to their original states with zero net change in the universe.
  • It is an idealization/limiting case - no real process is perfectly reversible, but slow, near-equilibrium processes (e.g. very slow isothermal or adiabatic expansion of a gas) approximate it.

Irreversible process:

  • Occurs spontaneously and finitely fast, passing through non-equilibrium states.
  • Involves dissipative effects (friction, viscosity, resistance) or occurs across a finite difference in pressure/temperature. …
