A reversible process can be exactly undone, leaving no change in system or surroundings; an irreversible process cannot be undone without leaving some permanent change - most real processes are irreversible.

Reversible process: A thermodynamic process is called reversible if it can be reversed in such a way that both the system and its surroundings return exactly to their original initial states, with no other change left anywhere in the universe. A reversible process must occur infinitely slowly (quasi-statically), passing through a continuous series of equilibrium states, and must be free of dissipative effects like friction or viscosity.

Example: A gas being compressed or expanded extremely slowly inside a frictionless, perfectly insulated (or perfectly conducting, for isothermal) piston-cylinder, such that at every instant the gas is in equilibrium, is an idealised reversible process.

Irreversible process: A process is called irreversible if, once it has occurred, the system and surroundings cannot both be restored to their original states without some permanent change occurring elsewhere. Most natural processes are irreversible because they occur at a finite (not infinitely slow) rate, or involve dissipative effects. …
