Reversible processes are idealized, quasi-static changes with no dissipation that can be exactly undone; irreversible processes are the real, spontaneous processes that cannot be exactly undone.

Reversible Process:

A process is called reversible if it can proceed in the reverse direction in such a way that the system passes through exactly the same sequence of intermediate states as in the forward process, and at the end, both the system AND its surroundings are restored to their original conditions, with absolutely no other change left in the universe. A reversible process must be carried out infinitely slowly (quasi-statically), through a continuous series of equilibrium states, with no friction or other dissipative effects.

Example: A very slow (quasi-static) isothermal expansion or compression of an ideal gas, carried out in a series of infinitesimally small steps, is treated as reversible (an idealisation, since truly reversible processes don't occur in nature, but are closely approximated).
