The placenta is the intimate structural and functional link between foetus and mother, formed by finger-like chorionic villi of the embryo interdigitating with uterine tissue; it performs exchange, protective, and endocrine functions.

The placenta is a special tissue formed during pregnancy through which the developing embryo (and later foetus) is attached to the uterine wall of the mother. It is formed by the interdigitation of finger-like chorionic villi projecting from the trophoblast of the embryo with the maternal blood-filled uterine tissue. A specific structural region called the villi and the uterine tissue jointly form the placenta.

Functions of the placenta:
