Implantation is the attachment and embedding of the developing blastocyst into the uterine endometrium — it marks the true beginning of pregnancy.

After fertilisation in the ampullary region of the fallopian tube, the zygote undergoes repeated mitotic divisions (cleavage) as it travels down the oviduct towards the uterus, forming a solid ball of cells (morula) and then a hollow, fluid-filled stage called the blastocyst.

The blastocyst reaches the uterus roughly 3–5 days after fertilisation. Inside the blastocyst, the outer layer of cells (trophoblast) comes in contact with the uterine endometrium, which has by now become receptive (thickened, glandular, well vascularised, under progesterone influence) — this is called the decidua.
