Triple fusion is the second fertilisation event of double fertilisation in angiosperms: a male gamete fuses with the diploid secondary nucleus (formed by the two polar nuclei) to give a triploid (3n) primary endosperm nucleus.

In a mature angiosperm embryo sac (typically 7-celled, 8-nucleate), the two polar nuclei located in the large central cell fuse (either before or at the time of fertilisation) to form a single diploid secondary nucleus (2n).

When the pollen tube enters the embryo sac (through a synergid, guided by the filiform apparatus), it releases two male gametes:

  1. One male gamete (n) fuses with the egg cell (n) — this is syngamy, forming the diploid (2n) zygote.
  2. The other male gamete (n) fuses with the diploid (2n) secondary nucleus — this is triple fusion (so called because it involves the fusion of three haploid nuclei: one male gamete plus the two polar nuclei), forming the triploid (3n) primary endosperm nucleus (PEN). …
