Two separate fusion events — syngamy and triple fusion — occur together in the embryo sac of angiosperms; together they are called double fertilization.

After the pollen tube grows through the style and enters the ovule (usually through the micropyle), it releases its two male gametes into the cytoplasm of the synergid. Of these two male gametes:

  1. One male gamete fuses with the egg cell (haploid) to form the diploid zygote — this fusion is called syngamy.
  2. The other male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei (or the diploid secondary nucleus, if they have already fused) located in the central cell, to form the triploid Primary Endosperm Nucleus (PEN) — this fusion, involving three haploid nuclei, is called triple fusion. …
