Double fertilization is the defining feature of angiosperm reproduction: it forms both the zygote and the endosperm in one coordinated event.

In angiosperms, the pollen tube releases two male gametes into the embryo sac. One male gamete fuses with the egg cell (syngamy) to form a diploid (2n) zygote, which develops into the embryo. The other male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei (or the secondary nucleus formed by their fusion) to form a triploid (3n) primary endosperm nucleus (PEN) — this is called triple fusion. Together, syngamy and triple fusion constitute double fertilization.

Significance:

  1. It ensures that BOTH the embryo and its nutritive tissue (endosperm) are formed together, in a coordinated developmental programme, so the embryo has a ready-made food reserve as it develops.
  2. It makes efficient use of both male gametes delivered by the pollen tube — neither is wasted, unlike in many other groups. …
