Faraday's laws state that a changing flux induces an emf, and the magnitude of this emf equals the rate of change of flux linkage.

First law: Whenever the magnetic flux linked with a circuit (coil) changes, an electromotive force (emf) is induced in the circuit. This induced emf exists only as long as the flux is changing — once the flux becomes steady again, the induced emf disappears (though the induced current continues if the circuit is closed and there is resistance, it stops once the flux stabilises).

Second law: The magnitude of the induced emf is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage (flux linkage = NΦ, where N is the number of turns of the coil and Φ is the flux through one turn). Mathematically,

ε = −N(dΦ/dt)
