Faraday's two laws state that a changing flux induces an emf, and that this emf is proportional to the rate of change of flux (direction given by Lenz's law).

Faraday's First Law: Whenever the magnetic flux linked with a circuit (or coil) changes, an electromotive force (emf) is induced in the circuit. This induced emf lasts only as long as the flux keeps changing — once the flux becomes steady, the induced emf disappears.

Faraday's Second Law: The magnitude of the induced emf is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linked with the circuit:

ε∝dΦBdt\varepsilon \propto \frac{d\Phi_B}{dt}

In SI units the constant of proportionality is 1, and including the direction (given by Lenz's law, which states the induced emf opposes the change producing it), the law is written as:

ε=−dΦBdt\varepsilon = -\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt}
