Nuclear fission converts a small amount of mass into a large amount of energy by splitting a heavy nucleus into two medium-mass fragments, since the binding energy per nucleon of the fragments is higher than that of the original heavy nucleus.

Nuclear fission is the process in which a heavy unstable nucleus (such as 92235U^{235}_{92}\text{U} or 94239Pu^{239}_{94}\text{Pu}), on absorbing a slow (thermal) neutron, splits into two lighter nuclei of roughly comparable mass, along with the release of 2–3 fast neutrons and a large amount of energy.

Example:

92235U+01n⟶56141Ba+3692Kr+3 01n+energy  (≈200 MeV per fission)^{235}_{92}\text{U} + {}^1_0n \longrightarrow {}^{141}_{56}\text{Ba} + {}^{92}_{36}\text{Kr} + 3\,{}^1_0n + \text{energy} \;(\approx 200\ \text{MeV per fission})
