Fission breaks a heavy nucleus apart at ordinary conditions (used in reactors); fusion joins light nuclei together but needs extreme temperatures (occurs in stars).

Nuclear fission.

  1. A heavy nucleus (e.g. 235U^{235}\text{U}), on absorbing a neutron, splits into two medium-mass daughter nuclei, releasing energy and a few neutrons.
  2. It can be initiated and sustained at ordinary/room temperature (using slow neutrons); this is the process used in nuclear power reactors and the atomic bomb.

Nuclear fusion.

  1. Two light nuclei (e.g. two isotopes of hydrogen, like deuterium and tritium) combine to form a single heavier nucleus, releasing energy (since the binding energy per nucleon of the product is higher).
  2. It requires extremely high temperatures (of the order 10710^7–10810^8 K) to overcome the strong Coulomb repulsion between the positively charged light nuclei before they can fuse — this is the process powering the Sun and stars, and the hydrogen bomb.
