Nuclear forces hold protons and neutrons together inside the nucleus; they are far stronger than electrostatic repulsion between protons but act only over an extremely short range and do not distinguish between protons and neutrons.

Nuclear force: The strong attractive force that acts between nucleons (protons and neutrons) within a nucleus, binding them together against the mutual electrostatic repulsion of the protons, is called the nuclear force.

Three properties:

  1. Short range — the nuclear force is extremely short-ranged, acting effectively only over distances of about 1–3 femtometres (10⁻¹⁵ m); beyond about 3–4 fm it falls off to essentially zero, unlike gravity or the electrostatic force, which extend to infinity.
  2. Charge-independent — the force between a proton and a proton, a neutron and a neutron, and a proton and a neutron is (very nearly) the same in strength; the nuclear force does not care about electric charge. …
