When light travelling from a denser to a rarer medium hits the boundary at more than the critical angle, it is entirely reflected back into the denser medium instead of refracting out.

Total Internal Reflection (TIR): When a ray of light travels from an optically denser medium to a rarer medium, it bends away from the normal (angle of refraction > angle of incidence). As the angle of incidence is increased, the angle of refraction also increases, and at a particular angle of incidence — called the critical angle (θc\theta_c) — the refracted ray grazes along the interface (angle of refraction = 90°).

If the angle of incidence is increased beyond the critical angle, refraction can no longer occur (Snell's law would require sin⁡θr>1\sin\theta_r > 1, which is impossible); instead, the entire incident light is reflected back into the denser medium, obeying the ordinary laws of reflection. This phenomenon is called total internal reflection.
