Total internal reflection needs light going denser→rarer at more than the critical angle. (OR: fringe width in Young's double-slit interference is β = λD/d.)

Part 1 — Total internal reflection

When a ray of light travelling in an optically denser medium strikes the interface with a rarer medium, part of it normally refracts into the rarer medium and part reflects back. As the angle of incidence in the denser medium is increased, the angle of refraction (which is larger, since the ray bends away from the normal on entering a rarer medium) also increases and approaches 90°. At a particular angle of incidence, called the critical angle C, the refracted ray grazes along the interface (angle of refraction = 90°). If the angle of incidence is increased further, beyond C, no refraction occurs at all and the entire light is reflected back into the denser medium — this phenomenon is called total internal reflection (TIR).

Conditions for TIR: (1) Light must be travelling from an optically denser medium towards an optically rarer medium. (2) The angle of incidence in the denser medium must be greater than the critical angle C for that pair of media (where sin C = 1/μ, μ being the refractive index of the denser medium with respect to the rarer one).

Part 2 (OR) — Fringe width

Fringe width is defined as the distance between two consecutive bright fringes (or two consecutive dark fringes) in an interference pattern.
