Total internal reflection (TIR) occurs when light going from a denser to a rarer medium strikes the boundary at an angle greater than the critical angle, and is entirely reflected back with no refracted ray at all.

Definition. When light travels from an optically denser medium into a rarer medium and the angle of incidence exceeds a certain critical value, the light is not refracted out into the rarer medium at all — instead, 100% of it is reflected back into the denser medium, obeying the ordinary laws of reflection. This phenomenon is called total internal reflection.

Why it happens. By Snell's law, n1sin⁡θ1=n2sin⁡θ2n_1\sin\theta_1 = n_2\sin\theta_2, going from denser (n1n_1) to rarer (n2<n1n_2 < n_1) medium bends the ray away from the normal (θ2>θ1\theta_2 > \theta_1). As θ1\theta_1 increases, θ2\theta_2 reaches 90∘90^\circ at a particular incidence angle called the critical angle θc\theta_c, where sin⁡θc=n2/n1\sin\theta_c = n_2/n_1. Beyond this, refraction becomes impossible and all the light is reflected internally.
