Bacillus thuringiensis is a soil bacterium that, during sporulation, forms proteinaceous crystals containing an insecticidal protein called Cry protein (crystal protein), encoded by various cry genes (e.g. cryIAc, cryIIAb for cotton bollworms; cryIAb for corn borer).
