Cry proteins are Bacillus thuringiensis-derived insecticidal toxins used to make pest-resistant Bt crops; by scientific convention, 'cry' (lower case, italics) is the gene name, and 'Cry' (capitalised) is the protein product of that gene.

Bacillus thuringiensis, a soil bacterium, produces crystal (Cry) proteins during a particular phase of its growth that are toxic to the larvae of specific insects, such as lepidopteran (cotton bollworm), coleopteran, and dipteran pests. When ingested by a susceptible insect, the crystal protein is inactive as long as it is a protoxin, but the alkaline pH of the insect's gut solubilises/activates the toxin, which then binds to the midgut epithelial cells, creating pores that cause cell swelling, lysis, and eventual death of the insect. Because these Cry toxins are specific to particular groups of insects and harmless to humans/other organisms, the corresponding cry genes (e.g. cryIAc, cryIIAb, effective against cotton bollworms; cryIAb, effective against corn borers) have been introduced into crop plants (like cotton) to make them naturally pest-resistant (Bt cotton …
