The soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces crystal proteins during a particular phase of its growth, encoded by a set of genes called cry genes (e.g., cryIAc, cryIIAb). Each type of Cry protein is toxic to a specific group of insects (e.g., Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera). When an insect larva ingests the toxin, it is inactive (a protoxin) until it is solubilised by the alkaline pH of the insect gut and activated; the activated toxin binds to the midgut epithelial cells, creates pores, causes cell lysis, and kills the insect.
