Bacillus thuringiensis produces crystal proteins called Cry proteins (encoded by cry genes), which are toxic to specific insect pests and form the basis of Bt-resistant transgenic crops such as Bt cotton.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a soil bacterium that, during a particular phase of its growth, forms proteinaceous crystals containing an insecticidal protein, commonly called the Cry protein (from 'crystal'). Different strains of B. thuringiensis produce different Cry proteins, each specific to a particular group of insects (e.g. some target Lepidopteran pests like cotton bollworm, others target Coleopteran or Dipteran insects).

  • The bacterium does not kill the insect itself directly by infection; rather, when an insect ingests the crystal/toxin (as an inactive protoxin), the alkaline environment of the insect's gut activates it into its toxic form, which binds to the gut epithelium, creates pores, causes cell swelling/lysis, and kills the insect.
  • Because the toxin is only activated in the specific (usually alkaline) gut environment of susceptible insects, it does not harm humans, other mammals, or non-target insects. …
