Both self- and mutual inductance are proportionality constants linking an induced emf to a rate of change of current - self-inductance within one coil, mutual inductance between two coils.

Coefficient of self-induction (L): When the current in a coil changes, the magnetic flux linked with the coil itself changes, inducing an emf in it (self-induction). The coefficient of self-induction L is defined by:

e = -L (dI/dt), equivalently L = N phi / I

where N phi is the flux linkage of the coil for current I. L depends only on the geometry (number of turns, area, length) and the medium (permeability) of the coil, not on the current itself.

Coefficient of mutual induction (M): When two coils are placed near each other, a changing current in one coil (the primary) changes the flux linked with the second coil (the secondary), inducing an emf in the secondary. The coefficient of mutual induction M is defined by:
