Mutual inductance between two coaxial solenoids is found by computing the flux one produces through the other per unit current, giving M = mu0 N1 N2 A / l.

Consider two long solenoids, S1 (inner, radius r1r_1, N1N_1 turns) and S2 (outer, coaxial with S1, N2N_2 turns), both of the same length ll, wound over each other so all flux from the inner solenoid links the outer one.

Step 1 - Field due to S1: If a current I1I_1 flows in S1 (with n1=N1/ln_1 = N_1/l turns per unit length), the magnetic field inside S1 is

B1=μ0n1I1=μ0N1I1lB_1 = \mu_0 n_1 I_1 = \dfrac{\mu_0 N_1 I_1}{l}

Step 2 - Flux linked with S2: Since S2 is wound around S1, essentially all of this field also threads through each turn of S2. The cross-sectional area is that of the inner solenoid, A=πr12A = \pi r_1^2. The flux through one turn of S2 is B1AB_1 A, so the total flux linkage with all N2N_2 turns of S2 is
