The mammary gland is a modified sweat gland made of lobes of milk-secreting alveoli → tubules → ducts → ampullae → lactiferous ducts opening at the nipple.

Structure of the mammary gland (to be drawn as a labelled sectional view):

  • Each female mammary gland (breast) is a glandular tissue embedded in a variable amount of fat (adipose tissue).
  • The glandular tissue is divided into 15–20 mammary lobes.
  • Each lobe contains clusters of alveoli — sac-like structures lined by milk-secreting cells.
  • The cells of the alveoli secrete milk, which is stored in the lumen (cavity) of the alveoli.
  • The alveoli open into mammary tubules.
  • The tubules of each lobe join to form a mammary duct.
  • Several mammary ducts join to form a wider mammary ampulla, which is connected to a lactiferous duct.
