HGP mapped the entire human genome: ~3.1 billion base pairs, ~30,000 genes, average gene ~3000 bases, humans 99.9% identical, and less than 2% codes for proteins.

The Human Genome Project (HGP) was a mega international project (1990-2003) that aimed to sequence and analyse the entire human genome. Its salient features (findings) include:

  1. The human genome contains about 3164.7 million (3.1 billion) nucleotide base pairs.

  2. The average gene consists of about 3000 bases, but sizes vary greatly – the largest known human gene, dystrophin, has about 2.4 million bases.

  3. The total number of genes is estimated at about 30,000 – much lower than previous estimates of 80,000-140,000; almost 99.9% of the nucleotide bases are exactly the same in all people.

  4. The functions of over 50% of the discovered genes are unknown. Less than 2% of the genome codes for proteins.

  5. Repeated sequences make up a very large portion of the human genome. Repetitive sequences are stretches of DNA repeated many times; they have no direct coding function but throw light on chromosome structure, dynamics and evolution.

  6. Chromosome 1 has the most genes (about 2968), and the Y chromosome has the fewest (about 231). …
