  3. Number of genes: The total number of genes is estimated at about 30,000 — much lower than earlier estimates. Almost 99.9% of nucleotide bases are exactly the same in all people.

  4. Repetitive and non-coding DNA: Less than 2% of the genome codes for proteins; the vast majority is made of repetitive sequences (stretches of DNA repeated many times), whose functions are still being understood.
