When an ambidentate ligand binds through one donor atom or the other, two linkage isomers result — e.g. the nitro (−NO2-NO_2, via N) and nitrito (−ONO-ONO, via O) cobalt complexes.

Concept. Linkage isomerism is shown by coordination compounds containing an ambidentate ligand (a ligand with two different donor atoms, e.g. NO2−NO_2^-, SCN−SCN^-, CN−CN^-). The ligand can link to the metal through either donor atom, giving two isomers with the same formula but different structures and properties.
