[CoCl2(en)2][\text{CoCl}_2(\text{en})_2] exists as cis and trans geometrical isomers; a common ambidentate ligand is NO2−\text{NO}_2^-.

(a) Geometrical isomers of [CoCl2(en)2][\text{CoCl}_2(\text{en})_2].

The complex is octahedral: two chloride ligands and two bidentate ethylenediamine (en) ligands around Co.

  • cis isomer: the two Cl−\text{Cl}^- ligands occupy adjacent (mutually cis, ~90°) positions; the two 'en' ligands span the remaining four sites.
  • trans isomer: the two Cl−\text{Cl}^- ligands occupy opposite (trans, 180°) positions; the two 'en' ligands lie in the perpendicular plane.

(A neat sketch: draw the octahedron with Co at centre; in the cis form the two Cl are on neighbouring vertices, in the trans form on opposite vertices, with the two en drawn as curved 'N–N' chelate arcs.) …
