Kohlrausch's law lets us find Λm∘\Lambda_m^\circ of weak electrolytes and the degree of dissociation / dissociation constant of a weak electrolyte.

Kohlrausch's law of independent migration of ions states that the limiting molar conductivity of an electrolyte is the sum of the individual limiting ionic conductivities of its cation and anion. Its main applications:

  1. Determination of Λm∘\Lambda_m^\circ for a weak electrolyte: For a weak electrolyte (e.g. CH3COOH\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}), Λm∘\Lambda_m^\circ cannot be found by extrapolation. It is obtained by combining the Λm∘\Lambda_m^\circ values of suitable strong electrolytes, e.g.

Λm∘(CH3COOH)=Λm∘(CH3COONa)+Λm∘(HCl)−Λm∘(NaCl)\Lambda_m^\circ(\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}) = \Lambda_m^\circ(\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}) + \Lambda_m^\circ(\text{HCl}) - \Lambda_m^\circ(\text{NaCl})

  1. Degree of dissociation and dissociation constant of a weak electrolyte: …
