Swarts reaction converts an alkyl halide to an alkyl fluoride using a metal fluoride; Grignard reagents are R–Mg–X; the poisonous gas from photo-oxidation of chloroform is phosgene (COCl2\text{COCl}_2).

a) Swarts reaction

When an alkyl chloride or bromide is heated with a metallic fluoride such as AgF\text{AgF}, Hg2F2\text{Hg}_2\text{F}_2, CoF2\text{CoF}_2 or SbF3\text{SbF}_3, the halogen is replaced by fluorine, giving an alkyl fluoride. Example:

CH3Br+AgF→CH3F+AgBr\text{CH}_3\text{Br} + \text{AgF} \rightarrow \text{CH}_3\text{F} + \text{AgBr}

b) Grignard reagents

Grignard reagents are alkyl (or aryl) magnesium halides, prepared by reacting an alkyl/aryl halide with magnesium in dry ether:

R–X+Mg→dry etherR–Mg–X\text{R–X} + \text{Mg} \xrightarrow{\text{dry ether}} \text{R–Mg–X}

General formula: R–Mg–X\text{R–Mg–X} (R = alkyl/aryl group, X = Cl, Br, I).

c) Oxidation of chloroform …
