At constant temperature, the partial pressure of a gas above a solution is directly proportional to the mole fraction of the gas dissolved in it, p=KH xp = K_H\,x.

Concept. When a gas is in contact with a liquid, some of it dissolves until equilibrium is reached. Henry studied how the amount dissolved depends on the pressure of the gas above the liquid.

Statement. At a constant temperature, the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas present above the surface of the liquid. Equivalently, the partial pressure of a gas in the vapour phase (pp) is proportional to the mole fraction (xx) of the gas in the solution:

p=KH xp = K_H\,x

where KHK_H is the Henry's law constant (its value depends on the nature of the gas and temperature).
