Henry's law: solubility of a gas is proportional to its partial pressure (p = KH x); applications include soda bottling and scuba diving. In positive deviation, vapour pressures exceed Raoult's-law values, so the total-pressure curve lies above the straight ideal line.

(i) Henry's law: At constant temperature, the mass (or mole fraction) of a gas dissolved in a given volume of liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas in equilibrium with the liquid:

p = KH . x (KH = Henry's law constant, x = mole fraction of the gas in solution).

Applications:

  1. Carbonated (soft) drinks and soda water are sealed under high pressure of CO2 to force more CO2 into solution.
  2. Deep-sea divers breathe air diluted with helium (instead of N2) so that less gas dissolves in the blood; this avoids nitrogen bubbles ('bends') on ascent.
  3. At high altitudes the low partial pressure of oxygen lowers its solubility in blood, causing anoxia. …
