Diamagnetics: feebly repelled by magnets (move strong→\toweak field), small negative susceptibility (μr<1\mu_r<1), and weak magnetisation opposite to the applied field, nearly temperature-independent.

Concept. In a diamagnetic material the atoms have no net magnetic moment. When an external field is applied, it induces a moment opposing the field (Lenz's-law-like effect), so the material is weakly repelled.

Three properties.

  1. Feebly repelled: placed in a non-uniform field, a diamagnetic sample moves from the stronger to the weaker region; a freely suspended rod sets itself perpendicular (equatorial) to the field.
  2. Negative susceptibility: its magnetic susceptibility is small and negative (−1≤χ<0-1\le\chi<0), and relative permeability μr\mu_r is slightly less than 1; it slightly reduces the field inside it. …
