A junction diode conducts only when forward biased. Fed with a.c. through a transformer, it passes current during the positive half-cycle and blocks the negative half-cycle, so the load carries a pulsating unidirectional (d.c.) current — output only during alternate half-cycles.

What is a half-wave rectifier?

Rectification is the process of converting alternating current (a.c.) into direct current (d.c.). A half-wave rectifier uses a single semiconductor (p–n junction) diode to rectify only one half of each a.c. cycle.

Circuit

The a.c. voltage to be rectified is applied to the primary of a transformer. The secondary is connected in series with the diode DD and a load resistance RLR_L. The output d.c. is taken across RLR_L.

Working

A diode conducts (offers very low resistance) when forward biased and does not conduct (offers very high resistance) when reverse biased.

  • Positive half-cycle: The end of the secondary connected to the p-side (anode) becomes positive. The diode is forward biased, conducts, and current flows through RLR_L, producing an output voltage across it.
  • Negative half-cycle: The polarity reverses; the diode is now reverse biased and does not conduct. Practically no current flows through RLR_L, so the output is (nearly) zero. …
