An average is a representative value of the data; a key property of the AM is that the sum of deviations about it is zero. Computed values: Mean = 23, Median = 22.94.

(i) What is an average? One property of Arithmetic Mean.

  • An average (measure of central tendency) is a single value that represents the entire set of data by indicating its central or typical value around which the observations tend to cluster.
  • One interesting property of the Arithmetic Mean: the algebraic sum of the deviations of all the items from their arithmetic mean is always zero, i.e. Sum of (x - mean) = 0. (Another property: it is affected by every item and by extreme values.)

(ii) Computation (N = 8+12+17+8+5 = 50):

10 - 20121518020
20 - 30172542537
30 - 4083528045
40 - 5054522550

Arithmetic Mean = Sum(fm) / N = 1150 / 50 = 23.
