Mean = Σfx/N = 2110/70 = 30.14; Modal class is 30–40, Mode = 30 + (10/27)×10 = 33.70. Properties: (1) sum of deviations of items from the mean = 0; (2) the mean uses every observation.

An 8-mark grouped-data question in Kerala Plus One (DHSE) Economics. We compute the mean using mid-values and the mode using the grouping formula.

Step 1 — Mean (direct method with mid-values):

MarksfMid-value (x)fx
0–105525
10–201215180
20–301525375
30–402535875
40–50845360
50–60355165
60–70265130
TotalN = 70Σfx = 2110

Mean = Σfx / N = 2110 / 70 = 30.14 marks (approx).

Step 2 — Mode:

The highest frequency is 25, so the modal class is 30–40.

Here L = 30, f1 = 25 (modal class frequency), f0 = 15 (preceding class), f2 = 8 (succeeding class), h = 10.

Mode = L + [(f1 − f0) / (2f1 − f0 − f2)] × h

= 30 + [(25 − 15) / (2×25 − 15 − 8)] × 10

= 30 + [10 / (50 − 23)] × 10

= 30 + (10 / 27) × 10

= 30 + 3.70

= 33.70 marks (approx).
