a — Spindle fibre:
These are thread-like fibres made of microtubules that extend from the two poles of the dividing cell towards the chromosomes lying at the equator. Each spindle fibre attaches to the kinetochore of a chromatid.
Function: spindle fibres are responsible for aligning the chromosomes at the equatorial plate during metaphase and for pulling the separated sister chromatids towards the opposite poles during anaphase, ensuring each daughter cell receives an identical, complete set of chromosomes.
b — Equatorial (metaphase) plate:
This is the imaginary plane across the middle of the cell along which all the chromosomes become arranged during metaphase.
Function: by aligning all chromosomes at this single central plane, the cell ensures that when the chromatids separate, an equal and identical set of chromosomes moves to each pole, guaranteeing that the two daughter cells are genetically identical.
