Hess's Law is a statement of the path-independence of enthalpy, since enthalpy is a state function.

Hess's Law of Constant Heat Summation states that if a reaction takes place in several steps, the standard reaction enthalpy for the overall reaction is the sum (algebraic total) of the standard enthalpies of the individual steps that make up the overall reaction. Equivalently: the enthalpy change of a reaction is the same regardless of whether it occurs in a single step or through a number of intermediate steps, as long as the initial reactants and final products are the same.
