Hess's Law says enthalpy change depends only on initial and final states, not on the path/number of steps taken — it follows from enthalpy being a state function.

Hess's Law of Constant Heat Summation: The total enthalpy change accompanying a chemical reaction is the same whether the reaction takes place in a single step or in a series of steps, provided the initial reactants and the final products remain the same in both cases.

Illustration: Consider the formation of carbon dioxide from carbon and oxygen.

Path 1 (direct, one step):

C(graphite) + O2(g) → CO2(g), ΔH1 = −393.5 kJ/mol

Path 2 (indirect, two steps):

Step 1: C(graphite) + ½O2(g) → CO(g), ΔH2 = −110.5 kJ/mol

Step 2: CO(g) + ½O2(g) → CO2(g), ΔH3 = −283.0 kJ/mol

Adding the two steps: ΔH2 + ΔH3 = −110.5 + (−283.0) = −393.5 kJ/mol = ΔH1
